Summertime Fun and more!

July 7, 20100 Comments

I hope all of you are having a good summer so far. I know for many, this time of year is when you’re finally able to get in your shops without fear of frostbite or skin sticking to the metal surface of your tools. Of course on the flipside of the coin is the fact that chances are now you’re worried about avoiding 2nd or 3rd degree burns from those same surfaces.

Regardless of whether this is the only time of the year you can really dive into those projects you’ve been planning or whether you’re a year-round woodworker just enjoying all the possibilities the summer brings. The hot months of the year are very busy with activities both in and out of the shop.

With that said, I just want to remind everyone that over the next month or so is when I traditionally step away from the mic and camera and take some time off. I’ll still be participating in our regularly scheduled Wood Talk Online shows, and I still plan to post new episodes of Spoken Wood Podcast too. And if it’s anything like the past couple of summers, you know I won’t be absent all that much. So please stop by to see if I break down and post something when I really should be mowing the grass or cleaning the pool.

In the meantime, I encourage you to checkout 2 big summer happenings this year. The first is the annual Lumberjocks.com Summer 2010 Awards. This year’s theme is Fluidity – “Like grasses swaying in a summer breeze, the fluid motion is visible in the solid form of the wood.” Create a woodworking project that portrays fluidity and/or movement, Be sure to describe your inspiration and vision – the interpretation is as important as the finished product. You have to be a member to participate, but it’s free to join! Hurry though, the contest ends July 31st!

The other big happening this summer is over at The Wood Whisperer Guild Build. This is a build along project for members of the Guild. It’s a great opportunity to sharpen your skills and build something along the way. To get more information about the build and the guild stop by The Wood Whisperer Website. This is a paid subscription club, but well worth the experience and it comes with some great perks too.

If you ever have any questions, I’m still here, just much sweatier than normal LOL!!! Email me at mattsbasementworkshop@gmail.com with any of your questions or comments.

Talk to you soon!
