Today’s episode we take a quick look at some of the adjusters on the metal bodied planes. During an earlier episode I tried to explain the parts of a plane, but there was one little adjuster I completely overlooked.

So while I go back to discuss this little adjuster that does a lot I thought we could talk about the entire adjusting process, using both the mechanical adjusters and a good old fashion plane hammer.

    I am sure you know this but there are two different bevel up planes. The Low Angle and the Standard Angle. The blade in the low angle is set at 12° and the standard angle is set at 20°. So if you have a 25° bevel on the blade then in the standard angle plane your cutting angle is 45° and 37° on the low angle plane.

      Hi Bob,

      The larger bevel-up planes, the smoothers, jack and jointers all have bed
      angles of 12 degrees. The only bevel-ups I’m aware of that come in either a
      Standard 20 degrees or low-angle 12 degrees are block planes.

      But, you’re absolutely right, altering the blade’s bevel angle will alter the
      cutting angle of the plane.

    I generally prefer to read blogs about woodworking, but I have found that your videos are very well done. My gripe with many videos is that the speakers aren’t very professional, this is not the case with your podcasts.
