To "water down" a varnish, I typically use a paint thinner. If it's oil based, otherwise adding a little water to a water-based poly would be in order.

Typically whatever the can suggests for cleanup, except soapy water, is what you should cut it down with to thin it out.

Do you use water or alcohol to dilute varnish?

(I believe you said you use watered down varnish to aid in staining end grain.)

Glad to hear you enjoyed the show and thanks for pointing out the difference in the Bandsaw packages at Highland.

I'm not sure how much I'd actually use one of the risers, I think it's great to have the option though. And for what it's worth, I have the Kreg bandsaw fence system on my old, old bandsaw and it works great!!!

As usual I enjoyed WTO. Last Saturday I purchased the Highland Woodworking Steel City 14″ Bandsaw. It’s great and I love it. The $499 package does not include the extra 6″ riser or the fence. Those were included in the $699 package. I’m picking up the riser later and possibly the fence, if I don’t go with the Kraig instead.
